Best Rental Fleet in the UK Award for 2000
(presented May 2001)
Modern Air was started by Derick Gunning in l989 with a Piper Arrow IV (G-BONC) with the aim of providing a higher standard of aircraft than normally available for self-fly rental.
The concept was successful and the fleet grew rapidly. Anna and Christine helped to establish Fowlmere Flying Club, a wholly owned subsidiary of Modern Air. PPL training commenced in 1991 and continued through to April 2002 with 84 students completing their PPL training at Fowlmere. Further training continues and many past students and new members proceed to obtain their IMC, multi-engine and night ratings.
A number of our past students purchased aircraft which were added to the fleet – many remain to date.
Aircraft maintenance is taken care of by Rudy and Kevin who maintained the fleet under our M3 approval for many years and have now achieved early EASA approval.
In recent years the fleet has become exclusively Piper with models ranging from PA28-181 to PA34-220T with PA31-350 and PA46 aircraft maintained on behalf of past students.
Our existing rental fleet (September 2010) includes three Archer III and one Saratoga aircraft. All these aircraft are equipped for foreign rental and are fully documented.
The aircraft are all charged airborne times only and the fuel drawback is the rental pilot’s when available – we will even do the paperwork for you including flight plans, HO60’s and customs formalities to ensure your trip is a success.
We can provide IMC; night ratings; proficiency tests for single and multi engine class ratings; IR renewals; check rides, safety pilot and aircrew services in your own or our aircraft.
Come and join us on one of our lunch trips to France or Holland which we organise throughout the year or come and discuss your requirements and let us show you around our rental fleet over a coffee.
We are usually available during the mornings, everyday with the exception of Monday and at all other times by arrangement.
